Photoshop How-To: Polaroid Effect Using One Photo

Posted by Kristan Wednesday, December 16, 2009 View Comments

Using only one photo, you can create an impact by making it look like combined by many photos. The right term for this one is "collage". This is a very simple Photoshop tutorial. Here's how it looks like.

From this:

To this:

Here's how to create the trick in Photoshop:

1.) Choose a photo with good points. Photo with people in it is a good example.

2.) Create a new layer, and name it as "background". (ctrl + shift + N)

3.) Transform (ctrl + T) the photo into a smaller size than the canvas size to work with the "polaroid photo" easier. I filled the background layer with blue to distinguish photos from the background.

4.) Use the rectangular marquee tool (M) to create a selection on the photo. After selecting a portion, be sure to duplicate that portion (ctrl + j) to create its layer.

5.) After duplicating, tilt the smaller photo to make it more realistic.

6.) Right click the duplicated layer and go to BLENDING OPTIONS. Check the stroke and adjust the values you preferred.

7.) After adding stroke, add a drop shadow to make it more realistic.

8.) Repeat steps 4 to 7, but be sure to use the other portions of the photo until most of the "polaroid" photos cover the large photo. Tilt them in different angles.

9.) Hide the larger photo (click the eye icon of that layer) to leave the smaller ones into their places.

In this final image, I change the background color from blue to black.

The Next One concert in Gensan was a BLAST

Posted by Kristan Tuesday, December 15, 2009 View Comments

As the maestro, Louie Ocampo jived with the rest of the band, the lights went out. Soon, people from different sides screamed with excitement. Flash cameras started to fill the stage, enough to prove the authenticity of the night. That was the time I felt enthusiastic.

The intensity brought by Sarah Geronimo right into the crowd was enough to make the event's conclusion. As she finished her introduction, the music filled the whole arena, one of the famous dance group of the country, G-Force, rolled in with the beat.

Sir Avel (Bariles), author of Gensan News Online Mag, gave me a chance to use his Canon 1000d with 200mm lens, and soon I started taking photos. After a few songs, it was the time Simon Wood, son of the great Victor Wood, filled the crowd with mellow tagalog songs.

After quite some time, the Pop Princess is back on track. She performed some her popular songs. Mark Bautista joined in to fill another wardrobe break of Sarah G, he also performed his soothing ballad songs.

Along with the fact that Jimmy Marquez is a Cebuano, he did some humorous bisayan ice breaker to keep the crowd in-touched. He also showed his talent in singing, one of it was his song piece in Star in a Million (2005).

Then, here comes the fast-beat set of the concert, she was dressed in black, obvious enough that she'll be performing fast-beat tunes. Later on, Jay-R, RnB prince of the country, accompanied her.

Subsequently, Jay-R performed RnB songs, particularly, So Sick by Neyo. He soon went down the stage to reach for the ecstatic audience.

After another wardrobe break, the Pop Princess went on to perform the concert finale. Dressed in a yellow gown, she sang the high-pitched song, Alone by Celine Dion.

To end the night, all of them were on stage. People began standing up to give a dominant standing ovation.

The Time I Freeze Time

Posted by Kristan Friday, December 11, 2009 View Comments

Using DSLR is a great advantage in capturing stills of a moving object. With proper use of shutter speed, you'll eventually capture a moment that your naked eyes couldn't see.

I tried using a basic point-and-shoot camera, Canon Powershot A560. The camera's features are not comparable with those of the basic Canon DSLRs. Aside from its point-and-shoot features, it uses digital zoom to reach out further subjects. It wouldn't help you achieve your desired output, considering you're a photography pro or hobbyist.

Kristan Franco

I somehow got two good shots. The shutter speed is not fast enough for a perfect "still" of the falling water. The speed is 1/60 sec. with its aperture f2.6. Not good, but I still managed to play it with the help of flash.

Posted by Kristan Wednesday, December 9, 2009 View Comments

Many are agreed that climate change may be one of the greatest threats facing the planet. Recent years show increasing temperatures in various regions, and/or increasing extremities in weather patterns.

Regarding this universal "threat", different ads on global warming, particulary WWF ads, had been made to inspire us in conserving the planet.

December 7-18, Copenhagen Climate Change Summit will assemble all nations to discuss the threatening climate change.

These 10 creative ad posters about climate change would surely make a simple contribution on how we all care about this very sensitive issue. Hover your cursor on the image to display the title.

All set? I won 2 ticket passes into The Next One concert on Friday night. My sister had never been excited like this before, the fact that she'll be spending the other pass. Aside from the two passes, I also got a free dine at Grab-a-Crab worth 1000 pesos.

Sarah Geronimo Live in Gensan

3 Important things in a concert:

1.) Camera - This is a must, and it will always be.
2.) Album CD of the celebrity singer - In this case, it would be always appropriate to let the artist sign the CD. You wouldn't let the singer sign elsewhere, are you?
3.) Your passes and best dress - you might wanna know why choosing your best dress in a concert is a must? Take note, you are having photo op with a celebrity singer.

..and nothing else. Seriously, i'm not in the mood to write a proper blog post about winning a place in this blogging contest, but I just wanted to express my thoughts with this vector art or whatever we call it.

Free Green Bacteria Wallpaper

Posted by Kristan Tuesday, December 8, 2009 View Comments

I used some brushes in creating this wallpaper, particularly some "paint" brushes which could be downloaded in some Photoshop-related sites. A paper texture and some shapes for the alien creature, or whatever you call it.

Free Green Bacteria Wallpapr from Kristan Franco

What do you call it? A green bacteria? Alien with tentacles? The first color that comes into my mind when I hear the word bacteria or alien is green, so maybe its a hybrid of an alien and a bacteria. Nonsense.

Zap Your Brain

Posted by Kristan Saturday, December 5, 2009 View Comments

You know what I love about this second semester? Weekends. The only way I can let myself be free from stress is Saturday and Sunday. It's my second year being a frustrated IT student, and right now, i'm feeling the pressure of being one.

Zap Your Brains by Kristan Franco

From the least expected minor teachers, down to profound terror profs infamous for their mind-blowing exams and quizzes, it's really a big deal to pass this semester, just to proced in the third year, which serves as the pivot point for most of IT students.

Another week of pressure, yet i'm always ready. Keeping my brain electrified just to withstand consecutive 2-hour lectures from different major subjects.I finally found myself busy these past weeks and i'm expecting the same these coming weeks.

I've been loaded with most of the subjects during MWF. While I have most of my free time in TTH.

MWF: Reality check.

4:30 am - My phone alarms (One Missed Call tone) but snoozes it into 6 am!
6:00 - i'm awake, gargles mouth, and stare blanky (starting up my brain)
6:10 - Eating my breakfast (A MUST!)
6:15 - Shower mode, (soap's getting thinner)
6:30 - I'm probably out in the shower room and grooming my self for 30 minutes!
7:00 - I'm off to school (15-minute ride would do)
7:30 - Psychology Class (The blah blah's of the works of our brain)
8:30 - PE (I hate early PE's, that means, i'll be sweating myself early!)
9:30 - My first major class, IT 225 Object-Oriented Programming (Working with VB .Net 2003)
11:30 - 1-hour lunch
12:30 - History (This class is so boring, trust me!)
1:30 - Two-hour class in this second major, IT 226 DBMS 2 (Fail!)
3:30 - Two-hour class in IT 224, System Analysis and Design (Fail!)
5:30 - No time for strolls, I'm going home.

TTH:

Usual routine, until...

7:30 - Physics class (THE MOST STUPID SUBJECT)
9:00 - Laboratory hands-on
10:00 - 2-hour break for lunch
12:00 - English class, technical writing (Somehow, this interests me)
1:30 - Religious Education (I've got a crush on my RE teacher. Yay!)

See? Would you agree that my week is toxic? Nevertheless, I still enjoy going to school (not just for my daily allowanc), but to the ongoing learnings I experience. One way to keep the enthusiasm floatin, ZAP YOUR MIND!

The Downside of Globalization

Posted by Kristan Thursday, December 3, 2009 View Comments

I spent my free time playing with Photoshop, while saving up the half of it reading some notes. I didn't expect i'd end up hitting the topic globalization. Here it is.

kristanfranco.blogspot.com

This image is manipulated by Kristan Franco

We all know that globalization stiffens a nation's productivity, culture pooling, and progress into nations through cash flows. Unity among worlds to function as one happens in this state, yet, we are to see globalization on another side of the tale.

First of all, globalization has been cited to enhance human life standards and productivity among the nations. Seeing that the population of the world is increasing, the effort of productivity is also increasing, thus leading to inventions of machineries to support productivity. Since most of the industries used machineries, unemployment ignites, and loafers float, in this manner, people ended up falling into poverty.

Eventually, culture is also affected when globalization is peaking. Countries that are more financially advance are the ones who top others. Importing goods such as gadgets, clothes, songs, and movies is a clear example of losing the culture of an underdog country. Furthermore, risking a small culture that would gradually fade.

Decisively, we should not forget that Globalization has its disadvantages, major disadvantages. These are big deal. Unemployment would set in, deterioration of our culture arise, and competition among countries would be firmed. Furthermore, people look for enlightenment about this wrong usage for globalization can't be undone.
